Internships for Accounting Undergraduate Students
About Our Internships

These guidelines introduce the student to information about the value of internships, how to get an internship and the procedures students need to go through to obtain the appropriate college credit for the work. Parts I and III below are to be followed by all students wishing to obtain college credit for their internship. International Students may also comply with the terms of Part II.

The Internship Program is the purview of the STARR Career Development Center. They are located in Room 12-150 in the Newman Vertical Campus. Internship Policies

Internship Timeframe: Internships may start no earlier than the first day of class for the term and must end no later than the last day of examinations (as posted on the Baruch college academic calendar).

Part I: Undergraduate Internship for Credit Process

Qualifications

Find the Internship
The Career Development Center website is the place to start. Any job requests sent to the Accountancy Department Office are immediately forwarded to Career Development. NOTE: Only students who wish to receive and pay for college credit for their internship need to proceed further.

Pick the Course You Want to Enroll In
You need to register for a one credit course. The button below contains the Internship Course Description document (.pdf), which provides extensive detail about the alternatives and course requirements. You can enroll in a maximum of 6 internship credits.

BUS 3001, BUS 3002, BUS 3003, BUS 3004, BUS 3005, BUS 3006 and ACC 5100 are 1-credit pass/fail courses.

Authorization to Work

A few employers want a letter from the School stating that you are eligible to work. Please download the Authorization to Work Form (.doc) and bring it to the accounting internship coordinator. This is only needed when an employer asks.

Obtain Employment Letter
Your offer letter must include the start and end dates of the internship, the required number of hours per week, the pay rate (if paid) and a description of the intern’s responsibilities at the employer.

Complete the Permit to Register
The below Permit to Register Form (.pdf) must be filled out by the student once the internship has been arranged. By signing this form, the student agrees to abide by the terms of the internship agreement.

Complete Internship Agreement Form
The Internship Agreement must be completed before registering at the registrar’s office. Without this completed form you will not be allowed to register for an internship.

Course Registration
You will receive the registration code for your selected course when you obtain the faculty signature. Then go to the Registrar’s Office to register and then to the Bursar’s Office to pay any additional fees if required. Once you register and payment is confirmed, you are officially done.

Obtain an “Offer of Employment” Letter
As part of his or her offer to you of an internship, your employer should provide you with a written “Offer of Employment” letter. This should include:

Since the internship is an academic course, we will ONLY approve internship for the dates of the Fall, Spring, and Summer term as defined by the office of the Baruch Registrar.

Part II: Steps for International Students

As an international student, you must have Curricular Practical Training (CPT) approval to hold an internship. CPT is employment that is an integral part of an established curriculum. The International Student Services Center is responsible for processing CPT Forms. You must have authorization from ISSC before you begin a paid or unpaid internship or any other form of CPT.

Course Registration
Your offer letter must include the start and end dates of the internship, the required number of hours per week, the pay rate (if paid) and a description of the intern’s responsibilities at the employer.

You must 1) take the completed internship agreement form to the registrar’s office to register, keep the receipt from registrar as proof of registration 2) Go to the bursar’s office and pay for the course 3) Take the registration and bursar receipt, the approved CPT form and the offer letter from the employer to the International Students Office to get CPT.

ISSC will then process your CPT form and inform you if there are any problems.

Part III: Post-Internship Instructions to Receive Credit

You will need to submit an internship report and fill out the following evaluation forms in order to successfully complete an internship.

Student Internship Report

Undergraduate students must write an internship report as described in the Course Description. You will not get a grade until you submit these completed evaluations and the report. The report must be at least three typed pages.

Employer Evaluation Form
This form (.pdf) needs to be completed and signed by your supervisor.

Student Evaluation Form
This form should be completed by you and is an evaluation of the firm and your experience there.
