A cross-agency team of federal employees has produced a guide to holding effective meetings in the government, covering topics ranging from planning through conducting to closing a meeting.

Elements include creating a clear objective and agenda for the meeting, selecting only those who would have a clear role to attend, keeping a focus on achieving stated outcomes, and keeping participants active and engaged. Also included is a process for determining the meeting’s cost based on the number of participants, their grade levels and the length of the meeting.

The guide was created by a group of participants in the Partnership for Public Service’s Excellence in Government Fellows Program who, in the words of a posting on the Partnership’s site, had “sat through deadly meetings that were long on time and short on decisions.”
